Real Madrid to face Ajax in Uefa Champions League last-16 stage

Real Madrid will continue the defence of their Uefa Champions League crown with a last-16 tie against Ajax.

Real are the most successful club in the competition’s history, having won the famous trophy on 13 occasions, including in each of the past three seasons.

However, this season is their first in the post-Cristiano Ronaldo era, with the Portuguese striker having been either outright or joint top scorer in the competition for the last six seasons in a row.

The Spanish giants topped Group G with ease, despite suffering two embarrassing defeats against CSKA Moscow, who finished bottom of the group.

Zinedine Zidane won three Champions Leagues in a row, but his successor did not even see out this year's group stage

They did so despite a sub-par start in La Liga, which saw manager Julen Lopetegui replaced by Castilla coach Santiago Solari midway through the group stage.

Their status as group winners means Real will have the advantage of playing the second leg at home at the Bernabeu, with the first leg to be played at ???.
