Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema hits back in France row and calls for international allegiance switch

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has rejected claims by France Football Federation president Noel Le Graet that his international career is over.

Benzema has scored 27 goals in 81 appearances for Les Bleus, but has not featured for his country since 2015.

Following the fallout from the Mathieu Valbuena scandal, the striker was not considered for Euro 2016 and was also left out of the squad as France won the World Cup in Russia last summer.

"Karim Benzema is a great player," Le Graet said on Saturday. "I have never placed his qualities in doubt. What's more, he's showing at Real Madrid that he is one of the best in his position.

"But the adventure with France is over for him."

The 31-year-old striker, who has scored 11 goals in 15 appearances for Los Blancos this term, was quick to respond on Twitter.

"Noel, I thought you weren't going to interfere in the decisions of the coach," he wrote.

"Know that it's me and me only who will bring an end to my international career."

And the forward, whose parents are from Algeria, added: "If you think I've finished, let me play for one of the countries I'm eligible for and we'll see."
