Real Madrid star claims Liverpool bus damage gave them 'extra motivation'

Federico Valverde insists his side gained extra motivation after Real Madrid's bus was damaged ahead of their Champions League clash against Liverpool.

Police estimated that around 400 supporters flocked to Anfield Road in order to welcome both teams upon their arrival, despite being urged to stay away.

A bottle was reportedly thrown at the vehicle carrying Madrid players and staff, smashing a window in the process, as it drove towards the stadium on Wednesday evening.

Liverpool were quick to brand the behaviour of the minority of people as 'totally unacceptable' in a statement released shortly before kick-off at Anfield.

It read: “We condemn unequivocally the actions that led to Real Madrid’s team bus being damaged during its arrival to Anfield this evening," the statement read.

"It is totally unacceptable and shameful behaviour of a few individuals."

However midfield star Valverde, who filled in at right-back during the 0-0 draw of the quarter-final second leg, was not concerned.

And the Uruguay international claimed Zinedine Zidane's men were able to use it to their advantage.

"It was nothing. I come from Peñarol, it's normal. It was nothing," the Uruguayan said.

"It gave us extra motivation, and we thought 'Ok, now on the field we are going to go out to kill and to leave everything behind."

Fortunately only one pane of the double-glazed window was broken during the incident, meaning no one inside the bus was hurt.

Liverpool staff were then seen cleaning up the shattered glass all over the floor outside the stadium with brooms before the club issued a swift response.

The club offered an apology to Real Madrid and said they are working with the relevant authorities to establish more details.

“We sincerely apologise to our visitors for any distress caused." the statement added. "We will work together with Merseyside Police to establish the facts and identify those responsible.”

Real , who will now face Chelsea in the semi-final, accepted Liverpool’s apology and the good relationship between both clubs won’t be damaged as a result of the incident.

"The relationship between the two clubs is great. Liverpool's directors have apologised and now we focus on the match,” Real Madrid's director of institutional relations Emilio Butraguenp said ahead of the game.
