Real Madrid's Bernabeu Stadium catches fire amid £500m redevelopment

The Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, home of Spanish giants Real Madrid, has caught fire amid a £500m redevelopment.

Plumes of smoke were spotted at the home of Los Blancos as work continues on plans to revamp the famous 80,000 seater ground.

President Florentino Perez gave the green light to works including a retractable roof and a huge 360 degree video screen.

With fans locked out of football stadia during the coronavirus pandemic, the improvements started early with Real playing the remainder of last season's restarted La Liga campaign and the entirety of this season at the smaller Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium, usually reserved for the club's youth and reserve sides.

But concerning scenes on Wednesday evening showed smoke billowing from the famous venue as sirens blared in the background.

It's not yet known if anyone has been hurt in the fire, nor the underlying cause.

Real were not due to move back into the Bernabeu until the summer of 2022 - a timeframe that was already in doubt.

And with work halting to identify the cause and extent of the damage it could throw that into further uncertainty.
