Real Madrid Requests Closed Roof For Champions League Match Boost

Real Madrid

Real Madrid has sought permission from UEFA to play their upcoming Champions League quarterfinal first-leg match against Manchester City under a closed roof at the Santiago Bernabeu. The move aims to enhance the atmosphere for the crucial encounter between the two European giants.

This request comes as City and Madrid prepare to face each other for the third consecutive season in the prestigious competition. In their previous meetings, City drew 1-1 at the Bernabeu in last season's semifinal first-leg and suffered a 3-1 defeat in Madrid in the semifinal second-leg the season before.

Madrid's decision to utilize the retractable roof, installed during a stadium renovation that increased capacity to 85,000 fans, underscores their strategic approach to gain a competitive edge in the match.

The final decision on whether to play with an open or closed roof will be made by UEFA in consultation with match referee Francois Letexier. The match officials will assess the conditions during a pre-match technical meeting scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

City will be without right-back Kyle Walker, who is sidelined due to a thigh injury sustained while on international duty with England. Walker played a pivotal role in City's previous encounters with Madrid, notably in the 4-0 second-leg victory at the Etihad Stadium.

Both teams' managers, Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola, have shared their perspectives on the upcoming clash. Guardiola emphasized the need for City to assert their style of play and capitalize on scoring opportunities against a formidable Madrid side known for their control and transition game.

Guardiola acknowledged the evolution of both squads since their last meeting, highlighting the fresh dynamics that will shape the upcoming fixture. He emphasized the importance of approaching the game with a proactive mindset and a focus on offensive tactics to unsettle Madrid's defense.

As the anticipation builds for what promises to be a captivating encounter, fans and pundits alike are eager to witness how the tactical battle unfolds between these two footballing powerhouses.
