Real Madrid release statement as Manchester United confirm Raphael Varane transfer agreement

Spanish giants Real Madrid have confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Manchester United for defender Raphael Varane to make the switch to Old Trafford.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News on Monday, Varane had successfully agreed personal terms with United and that a deal between the two clubs had also been agreed.

Now, both United and Madrid have officially announced that they have reached an agreement for the France international to make the move to Old Trafford in a deal that could be worth up to £43million.

In a statement, Madrid said: "Real Madrid C. F. and Manchester United FC have agreed to the transfer of player Raphael Varane.

"Our club thanks him for his professionalism and exemplary behaviour during the ten seasons in which he has defended our shirt, with which he has won 18 titles: four Champions Leagues, four Club World Cups, three European Super Cups, three Leagues, one King's Cup and three Spanish Super Cups.

"Real Madrid wants to show all its affection to Raphael Varane and his family and wishes him good luck in this new stage of his professional career."

Varane will now travel to Manchester to complete the formalities remaining in the deal, including a medical. However, due to the current quarantine rules in place the deal could take around another week to be finalised once and for all.

Varane will become United's third signing of this summer transfer window, following in the footsteps of goalkeeper Tom Heaton and winger Jadon Sancho.

His arrival at Old Trafford, like Sancho's, will significantly strengthen an area within the squad that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has wanted to bolster for some time.
