Real Madrid president confirms Sergio Ramos has asked to leave amid Manchester United reports

Sergio Ramos has asked Real Madrid president Florentino Perez if he can leave the club amid reports Manchester United are monitoring the veteran defender.

The Spanish defender is Madrid's longest serving player but reports in Spain claim he's unhappy and Perez confirmed he has asked to move to China.

"They [Ramos and his agent] came to see me in my office and told me they had a very good offer from China but the league rules over there wouldn't permit them to pay the transfer fee," Perez told radio station Onda Cero.

"What was I going to tell him? We said this couldn't happen but we'd speak to the club to satisfy him but that Real Madrid could not afford to let its captain leave for free as that would set a terrible precedent for other players."

Reports in Spain claim United are interested in the 33-year-old as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to strengthen his back line ahead of the next campaign.

However, there is nothing to suggest the centre back is on Solskjaer's shortlist as he looks to target young British talent as part of his rebuild.

United were interested in the defender back in 2015 but in the end the Spain international ended up using the interest to get himself a new deal at the Bernabeu.
