Real Madrid 'line up £180m bid' for Raheem Sterling following Man City's European ban

Real Madrid will reportedly attempt to take advantage of Manchester City's European ban by trying to lure their star winger Raheem Sterling to the Bernabeu with an £180m bid.

UEFA announced on Friday that City have received a two-year ban from all European competitions due to "serious breaches" of their financial fair play rules, although the club will appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

If it is unsuccessful, however, there is a good chance that many of their best players will seek moves away from the club.

And according to The Sun Madrid are eyeing up Sterling, and are prepared to make him one of the most expensive players in football history.

Sterling has become one of the best forward players in Europe under Pep Guardiola at City, and he has had another fruitful campaign so far, scoring 11 goals in 23 games in the Premier League.

Given his talent Sterling is unlikely to be willing to stay at a club who cannot offer him Champions League football, and he is also said to be intrigued about the prospect of playing abroad one day.

Madrid will have the opportunity to take a closer look at their potential target when they take on City in the Champions League last-16, with the first leg at the Bernabeu on February 26 followed by the return match at the Etihad on March 17.

The loss of Sterling would come as a huge blow to City, while they are also worried about losing the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero, not to mention their manager Pep Guardiola, who has been linked with a switch to Juventus at the end of the season.

If Guardiola does leave, former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino and Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers are already being named as potential replacements.
