Real Madrid legend issues damning Jose Mourinho verdict amid rumours of spectacular return

Iker Casillas has said that he does not want Jose Mourinho to become Real Madrid’s next manager.

Mourinho, who is currently in-post in his native Portugal at Benfica, has been heavily linked with a return to the Santiago Bernabeu.

The former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham boss was head coach at Real from 2010 to 2013.

In his time in Madrid, he won La Liga, the Spanish Super Cup, and the Copa del Rey.

He was sacked after the 2012-13 season, which he labelled “the worst of my career” after a 2-0 defeat in the Copa del Rey final to Atletico Madrid.

Now, however, reports have claimed that Mourinho is in advanced talks with the club to take over the reins from Alvaro Arbeloa, who assumed control after Xabi Alonso’s departure earlier this season.

The news came as a shock to many, with Mourinho not managing at an elite level since he left Tottenham in 2021.

He has since managed Roma, Fenerbahce and now Benfica since he departed the Premier League.

On X, Real legend Casillas, who has made the second-most appearances for the club behind Raul, voiced his opinion on the rumours linking Mourinho with a sensational return.

“I have no problem with Mourinho,” Casillas wrote.

“He seems like a great professional to me. I don’t want him at Real Madrid. I think other coaches would be better equipped to coach at the club [where I spent most] of my life.

“Personal opinion. Nothing more.”

Madrid were beaten by Barcelona in El Clasico over the weekend at the Nou Camp, in a defeat that saw their fierce rivals clinch the La Liga title for a second straight season.

Real were also dumped out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals by Bayern Munich, and they have endured a rocky couple of weeks after Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni were handed hefty fines for coming to blows with each other in training.

That followed Kylian Mbappe’s falling out with a coach during a session, while Antonio Rudiger was also made to apologise for his own separate incident.

There has also been an online petition signed by over 30 million people calling for Mbappe’s exit from the club, after the Frenchman was spotted on holiday in Sardinia while he was supposed to be recovering from a hamstring injury that kept him out of Real’s win over Espanyol.
