Real Madrid in quarantine due to coronavirus ahead of Man City Champions League tie

Real Madrid have been placed into quarantine after a player on their basketball team tested positive for coronavirus ahead of their Champions League clash against Manchester City.

Madrid face the Blues at the Etihad Stadium on March 17 with Pep Guardiola 's men holding a slender lead following a 2-1 win at the Bernabeu.

That game is now in serious doubt with all of Madrid's team in quarantine after a basketball player tested positive for the virus.

Both the basketball team and football team train at the same complex in the capital meaning precautionary measures have been taken.

The quarantine period is 15 days meaning the game against City could be postponed.

Madrid confirmed tomorrow's game against Eibar in La Liga will not go ahead.

Their statement read: "Real Madrid CF reports that a player from our first basketball team has tested positive after testing for the COVID-19 coronavirus.

"Since then, the recommendation has been made to quarantine both the basketball first team and the football first team, given that the two squads share facilities in Ciudad Real Madrid.

"Likewise, it has been decided to close the facilities of our sports city and it is also recommended that all Real Madrid personnel who provide their services in Real Madrid City remain in quarantine.

"The matches that were scheduled for today and tomorrow, corresponding to the Euroleague basketball and LaLiga soccer, will not be played."

Reports in Spain suggest players were told to leave the training ground urgently on Thursday morning.

City have already been affected by the coronavirus outbreak after Wednesday's game against Arsenal was postponed.

Members of the Arsenal team had come into contact with Olympiacos owner Evangelos Marinakis who tested positive for COVID-19 leading to the game being called off as a precaution.
