Real Madrid given green light for stunning £500m Bernabeu redevelopment

Real Madrid have been given the green light by Madrid City Council to start work on redeveloping the Bernabeu.

Real plan to knock down a near-by shopping centre before splashing out £500million on giving the famous stadium a makeover.

The Madrid City Council's stamp of approval, which was given on Wednesday, is the last permission the club need to start work.

The club originally unveiled their plans for the Bernabeu four and a half years ago but hit the buffers due to red tape.

According to documentation seen by AS, the revamp us due to be completed in October 2022 - although it is thought the process will take between four and five years.

The new-look stadium will reduce its 80,000 capacity by just one - taking it to 80,242 - but it will feature a retractable roof.

The new look Bernabeu will include new look private boxes around the ground along with the demolition of the car park to create a space for fans to converge in before matches.

The brand new chic exterior will glisten in the Mediterranean sun with its silver simmer. Some fans have even likened the state-of-the-art plans to a 'space ship'.

Inside, a new 360-degree video screen will be installed to add to the fans' experience.

Perez said in 2016: “With this agreement we will start a process of modernisation and transformation that will convert the stadium into an avant-garde architectural icon.

“This stadium will act as an economic and touristic invigorator and will contribute to strengthening the image of our city.”
