Real Madrid crowned champions of Spain as Barcelona crumble in La Liga closing stages

Real Madrid have won La Liga after a 2-1 win over Villarreal.

Two goals from French striker Karim Benzema was enough to seal the title after two years of Barcelona and Lionel Messi dominance.

A late reply from Vicente Iborra threatened to put the title party on hold but Sergio Ramos and Co hung on in the closing stages to seal the win.

In the end Barca conspired to lose 2-1 to Osasuna, a result which would have delivered the title for Real regardless of their result.

But Los Blancos did the job at their Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium temporary home with the victory.

It marks another triumph for manager Zinedine Zidane in his first full season at the capital club since returning in March of last year.

Real captain Ramos said: "After what we've been through, it was clear what we had to do after the lockdown.

"Barcelona were ahead of us so we couldn't afford a single slip up.

"We haven't had any easy matches, we haven't had any calm matches, and I'm absolutely delighted to have won La Liga again."

Real Madrid now look to their Champions League last-16 tie with Manchester City, in which they trail 2-1 after a defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu.

And Benzema is closing in on the Pichichi top scorer trophy as his two goals take him just one away from La Liga top scorer Messi.
