Real Madrid considering million defender to strengthen back line

Real Madrid Basketball

Real Madrid is reportedly seeking to strengthen its defense by enquiring about an 18-year-old central defender with a hefty price tag of $64.5 million (€60 million) attached to him, according to MARCA. The central defense has been a troublesome area for Los Blancos in the ongoing 2023/2024 season.

With the unfortunate ACL rupture of Eder Militao on the season's opening day against Athletic Club, followed by David Alaba suffering a similar injury later in the year, Real Madrid has been lacking in defensive depth. However, there is some good news as Militao is on the road to recovery ahead of schedule and is expected to make his comeback later this month or in March. His return will boost Madrid's chances of securing their unprecedented 15th Champions League title.

In the absence of Militao and Alaba, captain Nacho and Antonio Rudiger have stepped up admirably. Rudiger, in particular, has found his form and has been instrumental in the team's success. Despite initially struggling to adapt to life at the Bernabeu, he has not only provided strong defensive performances but also contributed crucial goals, helping Madrid lift the Spanish Super Cup and maintain their position at the top of La Liga.

While Madrid's defensive options have performed well, the recent setback against Atletico Madrid highlighted a lack of height in the absence of Rudiger. Marcos Llorente's late equalizer with a header exposed this vulnerability. This has led Madrid to consider bolstering their defensive options for the 2024/2025 season, especially with Nacho's contract set to expire on June 30.

According to MARCA, Real Madrid's search for defensive reinforcements has led them to Lille's Leny Yoro. The club has made inquiries about the 18-year-old talent, but the quoted price tag above $60 million is deemed 'prohibitive.' Additionally, Yoro is represented by Jorge Mendes, with whom Madrid has had a less-than-ideal relationship, further complicating any potential deal.

Despite these obstacles, acquiring Yoro could provide Real Madrid with a promising young talent capable of delivering top-level performances for a decade or even longer, should he fulfill his potential. As Madrid continues its pursuit of success both domestically and in Europe, strengthening the defense remains a priority for the future.
