Real Madrid confirm Luka Jovic transfer from Frankfurt on six-year contact for fee exceeding £50m

Real Madrid have confirmed the transfer of the 21-year-old Serbia striker Luka Jovic from Eintracht Frankfurt on a six-year contract for a transfer believed to be around €60m (£53.2m), subject to a medical.

Jovic established himself as one of the leading young talents in European football this season after scoring 27 goals for Frankfurt.

He began the campaign on loan from Benfica, but Frankfurt exercised a clause in the loan deal to make his switch permanent in April for a bargain fee believed to be around €7m (£6.2m).

The striker is seen as a long-term replacement to Karim Benzema, who has led the Real Madrid line for the past decade. Benzema is 31, and despite an impressive return of 30 goals this season he could be one of those to suffer when the ageing squad is overhauled this summer.

Zinedine Zidane, who captured three successive Champions Leagues at the Bernabeu between 2016 and 2018, returned as manager of Real in March following their dismal exit from the Europe at the hands of Ajax under Santiago Solari, and has made clear his desire to refresh a team which finished third in La Liga, 19 points behind champions Barcelona.

Manchester United's Paul Pogba and Tottenham's Christian Eriksen are both being considered as targets in midfield, while the club hope to conclude a deal with Chelsea for the transfer of Eden Hazard for around €100m (£86m) in the coming weeks.
