Real Madrid 'calm Neymar interest as they step up Kylian Mbappe pursuit'

Real Madrid appear to be giving up hope on signing PSG's want-away star Neymar and are instead turning their attentions towards his teammate Kylian Mbappe.

There were initially reports that Los Blancos wanted to go up against bitter rivals Barcelona for the signature of Neymar, but the Madrid board are allegedly split on whether he is the right fit for the club.

The 27-year-old has struggled with injuries ever since his world-record breaking €222m move to Paris two years ago, and has also been involved in off-the-field controversy, such as punching a supporter after his side's French Cup final loss to Rennes in April.

There is also debate over whether they would be willing to pay both a huge transfer fee and fund his giant wages.

And the signing of Neymar could hamper their plans to sign Mbappe further down the road.

Madrid are harbouring long-term ambitions to sign 20-year-old French sensation. It may not be possible this summer, but they are hopeful that in the future they can attract the World Cup winner to the Bernabeu.

Mbappe has scored 91 goals in 159 appearances in all competitions for PSG since his move from Monaco in 2017, and is thought to be one of Madrid's number one targets in the next few years.

Manager Zinedine Zidane has already been busy adding to this side this summer, having signed Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic, Eder Militao, Ferland Mendy and Rodrigo at a cost of almost £300m.

They are also being linked with Manchester United's Paul Pogba, although United are demanding £150m for his signature.

The spending spree comes after a disappointing season in which Madrid finished third in La Liga and were knocked out of the Champions League last-16 by Ajax.

Zidane is looking to bring the glory days back to the Bernabeu after he won one La Liga title and three Champions Leagues during his first spell in charge.
