Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has sent a bold Champions League warning to holders Liverpool.
The Spanish side completed their group fixtures on Wednesday night with a 3-1 win in Belgium over Club Brugge.
With Paris St Germain having already secured top spot in Group A and Real guaranteed runners-up position, the final round of games were dead rubbers.
Liverpool's 2-0 away victory at Red Bull Salzburg the previous evening ensured they topped Group E ahead of second placed Napoli so when Monday's draw for the first knock-out stage of the competition is drawn on Monday, with group winners being paired against runners-up, Jurgen Klopp's men could be on a collision course with Zidane's side.
Between them, the two clubs have lifted the trophy for the past four seasons.
Real completed a hat-trick of consecutive wins in 2018 to extend their record-breaking total to 13 when they defeated Liverpool 3-1 in Kiev but the Reds secured their sixth European Cup earlier this year by beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 to move up to third in their own right on the all-time rankings behind seven-times winners AC Milan and one ahead of five-times winners Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
Zidane quit Real just five days after his side's victory over Liverpool in the 2018 final but returned to the Bernabeu hotseat on March 11 this year.
Despite Liverpool currently enjoying an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League, the Frenchman insists he is not fazed by the prospect of meeting them in the last 16 or indeed any stage of the competition.
Quoted by the Express , Zidane said: “If we play Liverpool, we will eliminate them.
“We can't do anything about the draw.”
