Real Madrid, Barcelona could influence Liverpool transfer plan as Jurgen Klopp seeks out Paul Pogba

Liverpool will be looking to get their season back on track this week as they return to Premier League action.

Jurgen Klopp's men visit Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday evening (January 28) as they bid to halt a disappointing run of form.

The Reds are without a league win in five matches - failing to find the net in their past four.

They did score twice against Manchester United in Sunday's FA Cup fourth round tie at Old Trafford but were eventually beaten 3-2.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are fourth in the league table - six points adrift of leaders United.

Here is your morning digest on Tuesday, January 26...

Blood Red: Paul Gorst's verdict on Manchester United 3-2 Liverpool

Real Madrid and Barcelona may influence FSG transfer plan

After the defeat to Manchester United on Sunday came the inevitable post-mortem.

While Liverpool's performance was much improved it did little to temper frustrations from Reds fans concerned about their recent slump and lack of urgency in addressing what is a glaring necessity.

Klopp has been choosing his words carefully in recent weeks whenever the subject of the January transfer window and the need to sign a centre back to fill the void left by Virgil van Dijk's injury comes into question.

As the weeks have rolled on by and the results have deteriorated the first signs of tension have started to emerge, with owners Fenway Sports Group playing a risky game both financially and in terms of unpicking what has been so far a strong relationship with Klopp, the man who has delivered a Champions League and Premier League title in his time at Anfield.

Questions were raised once more on Sunday and while it was Rhys Williams' mistake that was highlighted on the pitch, the real missteps have been going on behind the scenes for a number of weeks.

The COVID-19 pandemic, as everyone is well versed by now, is having a huge effect on the football economy and Liverpool are feeling the pinch too, albeit their pain is likely to be less severe than some of the big hitters across Europe. That is largely down to FSG's responsible approach to managing their finances and sticking to their principles.

A look at the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona shows that nobody is immune to financial catastrophe, with Barca facing a period of austerity to try and firefight the ballooning debt that the club is laden with. Theirs is not simply a case of coronavirus hitting their bottom line, theirs is a tale of prolonged financial mismanagement predicated on times always being good.

For FSG their stubborn approach in the transfer market is being challenged by supporters.

Moments missed

Liverpool suffered another evening of frustration as they were beaten by League Cup semi-finalists Manchester United on Sunday.

Two goals from Mohamed Salah weren't enough as the Reds were dumped out of the FA Cup after a 3-2 fourth round defeat.

The result means Klopp’s side have now won only one of their last seven games and still haven't reached the quarter-finals of the competition during his tenure.

But there was plenty that went unnoticed or under the radar during the 90 minutes at OId Trafford.

Paul Pogba had a decent game for United at the weekend, although quite whether that was enough to earn the man-of-the-match award is very much open to debate.

Nevertheless, Klopp was impressed sufficiently to seek out the Frenchman after the final whistle.

The Reds boss chased down the United midfielder and the pair were spotted sharing a joke as they continued their conversation while heading towards the tunnel.

Rumours they were debating the interesting decision-making of referee Craig Pawson have just been made up.

We have taken a look at a few moments you might have missed.
