Real Madrid have apologised for an error during a video paying tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva who both died in a car accident earlier this year.

The video, which was being shown at the club’s Annual General Meeting, featured a photograph of the wrong Andre Silva instead using a shot of Elche forward Andre de Silva who shares the same name as Jota’s brother.

Madrid swiftly acknowledged the mistake and issued an apology in a statement where they regret the incident. It reads:

“Real Madrid C.F. apologises to Elche C.F. and its player Andre da Silva for having mistakenly included, in the obituary of an institutional video, his image instead of that of Andre Silva, brother of Diogo Jota, Liverpool player. We regret what happened.”

Florentino Perez, Real Madrid’s president, reiterated the stance during his address to the club’s members and apologised for the error.

Earlier this month, Madrid paid tribute to both Jota and Silva before facing Liverpool in the Champions League at Anfield.

Former Liverpool right-back and friend of Jota, Trent Alexander-Arnold, led the tributes by laying a wreath outside the ground with a message that read: "My mate Diogo.

"You are so missed but still so loved. Yours and Andre's memory will always live on. I smile every time I think about you and will always remember the great times we shared. Miss you mate, every day."

Fellow defender Dean Huijsen, manager Xabi Alonso and director of relations, Emilio Butragueno also attended the memorial with Alonso laying a second wreath expressing the feelings of the club.

That message said: "Real Madrid CF expresses its deepest condolences to Liverpool FC and to the family of Diogo Jota.

"The football world mourns the loss of an exceptional person and remarkable player."
