Real Madrid 1-2 Man City player ratings: Kevin De Bruyne stars in superb comeback

Man City came from behind to record an important first leg victory against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in the Champions League last-16.

Pep Guardiola looked to have tactically outclassed his opponents despite naming a surprise starting XI which left Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and David Silva on the bench.

City looked impenetrable until a mix-up at the back just before the hour mark allowed Vinicius Jr to break clear, before squaring to Isco to slide the ball past Ederson and open the scoring.

But the visitors got their just rewards after a haring run from Kevin De Bruyne ended with his cross finding Gabriel Jesus to nod past Thibaut Courtois and grab a crucial away goal.

Sterling was called into action and won his side a penalty shortly after via the clumsy foul of Dani Carvajal, with De Bruyne dispatching the resultant spot kick to complete the turnaround.

Madrid then had captain Sergio Ramos sent off late on for a professional foul on Jesus, giving them a mountain to climb in the second leg.

Here are the ratings from the Santiago Bernabeu.

Manchester City

Ederson 6

Really good save from Benzema, no chance on the goal, solid.

Walker 5

Riddled with mistakes, at fault on opening goal, not what he was.

Otamendi 6

His presence in starting line-up always a gamble, but was solid this time.

Went off injured early. He is still not back to his best after long lay-off.

Mendy 5

Booked. Can be so frustrating, gives the ball away and slack defensively.

Rodrigo 5

Got himself into trouble on opening goal, poor game. Frustrating.

Good performance, used the ball well and picked his passes.

Dangerous coming in from the right, had good efforts blocked and saved.

Gabriel Jesus headed City level (PA)

De Bruyne 8 - Man of the Match

Played just behind, he orchestrated everything good and scored penalty.

Jesus 7

Stuck out on the left wing, he worked so hard. Tireless display and scored.

Bernardo 6

Often played as a false nine, you just wonder if they’d tried a real nine…
