Johnny Depp and Amber Heard were back in court for the defamation trial which resumed yesterday after a week-long break.
Many of us have been watching the live stream as Amber Heard returned to the stand whilst Depp’s lawyer, Camille Vasquez, began her cross-examination of the Aquaman actress.
The defamation trial began on April 11 and whilst in court, Depp has not looked directly at his ex-wife Amber Heard and has worn sunglasses throughout most of the trial, writes The Mirror.
Those who have been watching the trial have wondered the reason for Depp’s refusal to look at Heard, but now the real reason has apparently been revealed.
At the beginning of her cross-examination of the actress, Ms Vasquez claimed to the court she knew why Depp has not made eye contact with Amber even once throughout the tense trial.
Why hasn’t Johnny Depp looked at Amber Heard in court?
During her cross-examination of the actress, Depp’s lawyer claimed that Johnny Depp made a promise to Heard that she would never see his eyes again.
After stepping up to the podium to begin the cross-examination Ms Vasquez asked Heard: “Mr Depp hasn’t looked at you once this entire trial, has he?”
To which Heard replied: “Not that I’ve noticed, no.”
"You've looked at him though many times, haven't you?" Vasquez said.
"Yes I have," Heard responded.
Ms Vasquez continued her questioning, saying: “You know exactly why Mr Depp won’t look back at you, don’t you?”
“I do,” Heard replied.
Depp’s lawyer continued: “He promised you you would never see his eyes again. Isn’t that true?”
Ms Vasquez later said: “He kept that promise hasn’t he?”
“As far as I know, he cannot look at me,” Heard responded.
Ms Vasquez then clarified “He won’t look at you, right Miss Heard?”
Amber answered: “He can’t.”
When did Johnny Depp make the vow that Amber would never see his eyes again?
In July 2016, just two months after Heard had obtained a restraining order against Depp, she arranged to meet with him in San Francisco.
On Monday, an audio recording taken during the meeting at a San Francisco hotel was played to the court during the defamation trial.
During the recording, Amber can be heard saying: “Please, I just want to hug you and say bye.”
Johnny responds, saying: “Really after all the s**t you just said…after all the s**t you accused me of, don’t touch me.”
He can then be heard making the promise, saying: “I am nothing to you, and I will always be nothing to you. You will not see my eyes again.”
