Real Christmas tree demand by Bristol folk soars since pandemic

A Bristol-based garden centre has said they are selling Christmas trees faster than ever and the public seem to be buying their trees even earlier this year.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, Kemps Plants in Westerleigh Road were selling around 3,500 of its Christmas trees each season.

That has since risen to 5,500 and the owner of the garden centre says he think there will be a year increase of up to 400 more people buying from them in the future.

Kemps Plants owner Lee Kemp, 50 said: “We expect to sell around 5,500 Christmas trees this year and they will be arriving on November 18.

“The trees arrive every three to four days but people are starting to put their trees up even earlier now.

“We do not have a problem with supply like others. We are locked in to a grower in Scotland. The main problem we may face is getting them transported.

“Other places may have problems because importing them is expensive now.”

Mr Kemp says that he believes he manages to sell so many trees because of the generally low price he sells the Christmas trees for.

He said: “We sell trees for £29.99 for any size. People can normally spend between £60 to £80, but we have one price. The Norman non drop Christmas tree is the most popular.

“I noticed last year people were trying to do something different over Christmas and many were opting for real trees.

“Last year the issue we faced was people were buying trees as fast as we were getting them in.

“I expect us to need to get in an extra three to four hundred year on year now.

“Before the pandemic we would only have sold about 3,500 but this year I expect it to be around 5,500.

“I think people come to us because we are one of the cheapest around for people to buy from.”
