Spurs make Giovani Lo Celso transfer decision

Real Betis president Angel Haro insists that the club believe Spurs will exercise their option to buy Giovani Lo Celso in the January transfer window.

Lo Celso joined Spurs in the summer following months of speculation about his future, making the switch on deadline day on a season-long loan.

Spurs have the option to buy the midfielder in January for €32million (£27million), but if they do not activate the clause in January, that fee would become €40m (£33.9m) in the summer.

If Spurs qualify for the Champions League this season, that option to buy becomes mandatory - though if they fail to finish in the top four, they have the option not to buy the Argentina international.

With Jose Mourinho replacing Mauricio Pochettino as manager in November, added with prolonged absence due to injuries, Lo Celso has struggled to make an impact in north London thus far.

However, Betis chief Haro still believes Spurs will sign the midfielder, and thinks it is likely to happen in the January transfer window.

Haro was asked at the club's general meeting whether there was any update on Lo Celso, and he replied that there was "no news regarding the purchase option."

"Yes, [Spurs] will exercise it because if they don't they will be taxed a lot in June," Haro told Estadio Deportivo.

"[They] may also have to exercise it on a mandatory basis [in the summer].

"[We] understand Spurs will exercise the option."

However, Haro added that the club would be "delighted" to welcome the midfielder back should Spurs fail to qualify for the Champions League and also decide not to redeem their option.
