Real Betis fans fight with riot police as ugly scenes spoil end of Man Utd win

Real Betis fans fought with riot police as ugly scenes marred the end of Manchester United's 4-1 Europe League win.

Five minutes before the end of the last-16 clash, a section of the away end appeared to try and break into the home stand by climbing over the barrier separating supporters. Police were quick to intervene amid reports seats were being pulled up and thrown by some fans.

Video footage taken by United supporters and posted to Twitter showed a line of riot police staying guard on the Betis side of the barrier and holding fans back, with scuffles breaking out.

Man United showed their character by comprehensively beating Real Betis 4-1 in the Europa League four days on from their humiliating defeat at Liverpool.

Erik ten Hag's men were battered 7-0 by their bitter rivals, equalling the club's record competitive defeat and, labelled the performance "unprofessional".

Ten Hag stuck with the same starting line-up for the Betis game and his players repaid their manager's faith in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

Marcus Rashford kept his cool to lash the hosts into an early lead at Old Trafford, only for Ayoze Perez to drill home a superb leveller against the run of play.

That moment gave hope to Manuel Pellegrini's side and David De Gea was breathing a sigh of relief just before the break after his terrible pass led to a Perez effort deflecting off the post.

But United returned strongly from half-time and Antony curled home a lovely left-footed strike before skipper Bruno Fernandes, who faced intense scrutiny for his Liverpool display, headed home.

Wout Weghorst, meanwhile, scored his first Old Trafford goal to wrap up a comfortable win that means Ten Hag's men head to Seville next Thursday with a three-goal cushion.
