'Ready to get stuck in' - Young defender becomes Bristol City's first signing of the summer

It's just 10 days since Bristol City's season came to an end with the 1-1 draw at Hull City but Lee Johnson and his recruitment team have moved quickly to make their first addition of the off-season with the arrival of centre-back Robbie Cundy from Bath City.

The 21-year-old has signed a two-year contract at Ashton Gate after just one season at Twerton Park in which he was an integral part of Jerry Gill's side landing Supporters’ Player of the Year, Players’ Player and Manager’s Player of the Year awards.

The 6ft 4ins Cundy signed for the Romans from Gloucester City but made a huge impression over 48 appearances for Bath showcasing his strength in the air but also an ability with the ball at his feet.

"This move means a lot," Cundy told bcfc.co.uk . "I’m delighted to have signed and I can’t wait to get started, I’m really looking forward to it.

"It’s a big step of course but I’m ready to go, to get stuck in and do my best. Hopefully that will raise a few eyebrows."

Cundy's arrival is a long-term project for the Robins as he'll slot into the under-23 set-up and head coach Johnson may elect to look for a loan move to grow his Football League experience.

Cundy did make one appearance in the EFL Trophy for hometown club Oxford United, playing 90 minutes in a 2-0 win over Dagenham & Redbridge, but outside of that has operated exclusively in non-league football.

Oxford loaned him out to five different clubs before he secured a permanent move to Gloucester City and after one campaign at the Jubilee Stadium earned a transfer to Bath City where his performances have caught the eyes of Bristol City scouts .

For Bath it's a validation of the faith they have placed in Cundy, allowing him to grow into one of the best young defenders in non-league football while also maintaining their strong links with Bristol City.

Young Robins James Morton and Freddie Hinds spent this season on loan at Bath while Jojo Wollacott, Connor Lemonheigh-Evans, Opi Edwards and first-team players Max O'Leary and Antoine Semenyo have also enjoyed time at Twerton Park in the last two years.

"Having sat with Robbie in the summer and discussed his football ambitions, it was clear he had the desire to return to professional football," said Gill on Bath City's official website .

"During the season his commitment, application and willingness to learn saw him make huge strides in all areas of his game. I am delighted he has secured his move to Bristol City, further enhancing our ongoing relationship with Brian Tinnion and the Robins."
