Reading suffer managerial blow ahead of Nottingham Forest meeting

Reading FC have confirmed that manager Jose Gomes has left the club after ten months in charge.

The Portuguese coach was appointed as Paul Clement's successor back in December 2018 and successfully steered them away from relegation last term, including a comfortable success over Nottingham Forest following Aitor Karanka's departure.

However, after a poor run of five defeats in six games and only two wins all season, despite recording the highest net spend in the Championship this summer, the pair have parted ways with the club sat 22nd in the table - and the Royal Berkshire club will hope to have a new man in charge when they visit the City Ground on October 26.

In a club statement on Wednesday afternoon, Reading said: "Reading Football Club can announce that José Gomes has left his position as first-team manager.

"Gomes joined the club at the end of December 2018 and successfully steered the club away from the threat of relegation.

"However, following just two wins in the first 11 league games in 2019-20, owner Mr Yongge Dai has made the difficult decision to part company with Gomes and make a change at first-team level.

"We would like to sincerely thank José for his hard work during his tenure as manager at Reading Football Club and we wish him the very best of luck in his future career.

"The club will make no additional comment at this time but will provide further updates as soon as possible."

Gomes becomes the second manager to leave their post in the Championship in two days after Daniel Stendel said farewell to Barnsley yesterday.

The pair join Neil Harris and Jan Siewert as the four managers to have left their jobs after the opening 11 games of the season.

Early reports have linked former Stoke City and Southampton manager Mark Hughes with a move to the Madejski Stadium.

Hughes has been out of work since leaving the Saints last year but is yet to manage at Championship level.

Ex- Forest assistant boss Roy Keane, Chris Hughton, and John O'Shea have also been touted as potential successors for Gomes.
