Reading star racially abused after Cardiff City match in sickening message

Reading star Yakou Meite was racially abused on social media after missing a penalty during his side's 3-0 Championship win over Cardiff City on Sunday.

The Royals dominated for long periods and had the game wrapped up after John Swift added to George Puscas' brace at the Madejski Stadium.

Reading had the chance to extend their lead in injury time after Cardiff captain Sean Morrison brought down Andy Yiadom in the area, although Meite's spot-kick was saved by Alex Smithies.

And after the match in Berkshire, Meite shared an image on his official Twitter account of a message one user had sent him following his penalty miss.

The message read: "Mother f*****. Can't score penalty. F****** monkey."

The post was captioned with the message "I don't think I need to speak. @ReadingFC" by the Ivorian.

In response to the message, Reading tweeted off their official Twitter account to defend the 23-year-old.

Their post read: "We won’t give oxygen to racist comments sent to this man via social media this afternoon.

"Instead, we will let a picture tell a thousand words.

“We’ve got Meite...Yakou Meite...”

Meite later wrote on Twitter: "Thanks everyone for the support, we are all together, thanks again."

Defeat was Cardiff's second in three matches this season, with Neil Warnock's troops facing managerless Huddersfield Town in South Wales on Wednesday night.
