Reading manager praises Bristol City's adaptability after Royals suffer injury blow

Reading boss José Gomes has praised Bristol City's adaptability ahead of the two sides' showdown at Ashton Gate which will have ramifications at both ends of the table.

The Royals manager was speaking after midfielder John Swift was ruled out for the rest of the season following hip surgery. The key man was already expected to be out of Friday's game and hasn't played since March 30, despite it being a "small injury".

Reading travel to Ashton Gate four points clear of the Championship relegation zone with four games remaining, while Bristol City are battling to keep hold of their precious play-off place at the other end of the table.

The Robins' have been catapulted into the top six by a recent resurgence which has seen boss Lee Johnson tinker with his formation on a number of occasions, including mid-game during the win over Middlesbrough.

Johnson's tactical nous has been recognised by his Portuguese counterpart ahead of Friday's match.

José Gomes told Reading's official website: "Bristol City have a very strong team.

Bristol City legends show they've still got it by inspiring Sunday League team to title

"Good players, an aggressive midfield, and without changing any players they are able to change their system.

"They can go to 3-5-2, 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 with the same players. It’s one of their strongest points.

"Sometimes they change their system during games. The players are doing very well."

Gomes added: "Our players have been training well. I have intelligent players, and they can also play in different systems – like when they did well in the Norwich game."

Speaking to GetReading after the John Swift injury news was revealed, Gomes said: "Losing Swift is a big blow. It was only a small injury but his hip needed a clean so he had to have it done.

"He will miss the season but should be back for pre-season."
