Reading look at QPR striker, Middlesbrough eye Newcastle veteran - Championship rumours

It threatened to be a quiet day on the transfer front until Cardiff City made their fifth signing of the summer by announcing the future arrival of Callum O'Dowda.

The Bristol City midfielder has signed a three-year deal with the Robins' Severnside rivals on the expiration of his contract, admitting he feels he is hitting his prime following a disappointing campaign under Nigel Pearson.

The Bluebirds have been by far the busiest club of the window so far, getting their deals done early doors with plenty of preparation time ahead of the next season towards the end of next month.

The transfer window officially opens on Friday, on the same day the squad are due back at the Robins High Performance Centre for initial testing, and therefore rumours and speculation will continue to swirl up until it closes at the beginning of February.

With Kal Naismith and Mark Sykes already through the door for City, here's the latest rumours from their Championship rivals.

Reading looking at Charlie Austin

Cash-strapped Reading are plotting to exploit the free transfer market by looking towards experienced striker Charlie Austin.

Reports from Football Insider claim the 32-year-old could be heading to City's Championship rivals as he prepares to leave Queens Park Rangers on a free following the expiration of his contract at the end of June.

A move for the Austin would see him reunited with director of football Mark Bowen with the pair previously working together at Southampton. Reading are looking to bolster their attacking options after last season's top scorer John Swift joined West Brom.

James Tarkowski to Everton

The exodus at recently relegated Burnley looks set to begin with defender James Tarkowski closing in on a move to Everton. The England defender has held talks with the Toffees as he prepares to leave on a free transfer.

BBC Sport suggests Frank Lampard's Everton are leading the charge ahead of Steven Gerrard's Aston Villa who also held an interest. Their striker Wout Wegorst, a £12m arrival in January, is also braced to leave following their drop into the Championship.

Although there's still no concrete reports linking former City player Josh Brownhill away from Turf Moor, with previous speculation suggesting he could be heading for West Ham.

Middlesbrough looking at Dwight Gayle

Striker Dwight Gayle could finally leave Newcastle with reports linking him to close rivals Middlesbrough. Manager Chris Wilder wants to add more quality to a side that finished just short of the play-offs last season.

The Daily Mail write the experienced frontman, 32, is likely to leave the Toon this summer having made just eight appearances from the substitute bench for Newcastle last season.

Gayle has also had a reputation as a prolific striker in the Championship having scored 23 in 32 for Newcastle during the 2016/17 campaign. He also hit the same number in 39 games for West Brom during a loan spell two years later.

Stoke wing-back wanted by Rangers

The Potters could pocket £5million if they decide to sell wing-back Josh Tymon to Scottish giants Rangers.

Football Insider are claiming Rangers have made an enquiry to Stoke boss Michael O'Neill to determine whether he would be an achievable target this summer.

Tymon was a key figure in Stoke's disappointing campaign but a lack of competition on the left side of defence means Stoke may be reluctant to let the 23-year-old leave.
