Reading confirm loan signing of Everton defender

Lewis Gibson has completed his season-long loan move to Reading.

The central defender signed a new two-and-a-half-year deal with Everton in January and moved to Fleetwood Town on loan for the remainder of the campaign, helping them to the League One play-offs.

Everton planned for him to again spend the new term away from Goodison Park but at a higher level.

Huddersfield Town were interested in Gibson but he has opted to join Championship leaders Reading with the hope he can pick up regular first-team football and return to Everton next season ready to challenge for a place in the first-team.

Carlo Ancelotti had discussed keeping the 20-year-old England youth international on Merseyside but the decision was made to continue his development at Reading.

Everton were keen to send Gibson to a club looking to play a similar brand of football to the one Ancelotti is looking to instil at Goodison while Reading manager Veljko Paunović is thought to have impressed during talks.
