Reading boss has 'no idea' about Nottingham Forest bid for defender

Reading manager Veljko Paunovic has responded to transfer speculation linking Tom Holmes to Nottingham Forest.

Forest submitted a bid for the defender on Sunday of less than £1.5 million for the player who is into the final year of his contract at the club.

The 21-year-old came through the academy in Berkshire and has only featured in two of the club's four competitive matches so far this season.

The centre-back, who featured mainly as a right-back last season, was a late substitute in the opening day defeat at Stoke City but played the full 90 minutes of the Carabao Cup first round defeat to Swansea City.

Since then, he has been an unused substitute for home matches first against Preston North End and yesterday against Bristol City.

Royals boss Paunovic addressed the rumours about Forest's bid for the player after Tuesday's 3-2 defeat, telling BerkshireLive: "I have no idea about that, so no comment."

The 43-year-old manager was similarly tight-lipped when his club's reported interest in former Red Yuri Ribeiro was put to him.

Paunovic responded: "Who is Yuri Ribeiro? I don't know anything about it."

Ribeiro was released by Forest in June after the left-back made 57 appearances for the club in all competitions across two seasons after signing from Portuguese giants Benfica in 2019.

Reading have signed just one senior player this summer, Tom Dele-Bashiru, on loan from Premier League Watford, after only recently coming to an agreement with the EFL to ease a transfer embargo.

Transfer activity at the club has predominantly been outgoings this summer, with talented youngsters Michael Olise and Omar Richards leaving to join Crystal Palace and Bayern Munich, respectively.
