Readers' travel photograph competition: September – sport

Sept readers' gallery: Beach cricket in Goa
Slawek Kozdras: I liked the carefree atmosphere of this leisurely cricket match between a group of boys on a beach in Goa in the late afternoon. I took the pictures from just behind one of the boys (you can see his leg on the left) with a long lens and went for a sequence to show what happens just before, during and after a strike. Sept readers' gallery: Burmese monks playing their traditional sport of chinlon

Sept readers' gallery: A rainy day at this year's Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes
Rory McDonald: A rainy day at this year's Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes, Lancashire. The heavens were about to open but a few courageous spectators braved the weather to sit in the stands. Photograph: Rory McDonald
Sept readers' gallery: two kayakers in Geiranger, Norway
Roslin Zuha: On a cruise of Norwegian fjords, I walked out onto our balcony early one morning to see two kayakers enjoying the incredible surroundings of Geiranger.  Photograph: Roslin Zuha
Sept readers' gallery: Cricket in Dhaka
Dominic Burdon: Despite the ground being laden with plastic and other garbage, Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is one of the few places in the world where plastic bags are banned. This image shows how sport really can be played anywhere, even at the busy, rubbish-strewn docks. Photograph: Dominic Burdon
Sept readers' gallery: Cricket in Goa
Matthew Parker: The children of the family we rented a house from in Goa spent the long, hot afternoons in the build-up to the monsoon playing cricket in the front yard. Sebi, the bowler, was a master of spin; the batter, Elias, a slogger. They went at each other for hours, but every so often the ball would be launched into the river (out of shot to the right) and that would be the excuse to forget about the cricket and jump in.

Sept readers' gallery: football
Aisla Baillie: The match is between Stokesley Sports Club FC (Northern League, Division 2) and Clarry FC from Redcar (my son used to play for them). I don't know a lot about football but I like taking pictures that capture the seriousness of the players; their faces and posture can capture that moment of delight, anger, gritted teeth, disappointment or whatever is going on in the game. Sept readers' gallery: Victoria Pendelton, UCI World Cup 2012
Catherine Philip: Victoria Pendleton wins the quarter-final of the women's sprint at UCI World Cup 2012, as part of the London Prepares series. Photograph: Catherine Philip
Sept readers' gallery: chool in Darjeeling, India
Trevor Thompson: Spectators watching a volleyball match final, cheer a home point as the ball enters the frame, during an inter-schools sports tournament in the Himalayan town of Keylong, in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.
Natalie Mayer, judge: A nice creative perspective on sports photography, I like it. A tighter crop and bit of subtle vignetting would help give the shot a main focal point... at the moment the eye doesn't quite know where to settle. But I love the moment and the fun of this image.

Sept readers' gallery: Kiteboarder, Newport, Rhode Island
Denis Cohen, runner-up: This photo was taken off the beach in Newport, Rhode Island on the US's eastern seaboard. There were a fleet of kiteboarders soaking up the sunset.
Natalie Mayer, judge: Beautiful light, expertly captured. This is a technically spot on image, the exposure is lovely, and the action has been well frozen. I bet the surfer would love to have this image adorning his walls

Sept readers' gallery: Flags Race Coolum Beach, Queensland, Australia
Andrew Sole, winner: The flag race is part of the surfers' carnival at Coolum Beach, Queensland. Competitors have to run and grab the plastic flags.
Natalie Mayer, judge: This is a classic image, well captured. A real sporting moment in time. It's nice to have the expressions of the three players all so clear and visible. Compositionally it's a tiny shame that the foot on the left is cropped – cropping tightly to the right of the shot would lessen the impact of this though.
