I was spoilt for choice last week, to a frankly maddening degree. With much frowning and chewing of biro lids, I put songs in, took them out, put them in again and still couldn't be sure I'd chosen the right 10. God help me if I ever have to make a really important decision.
Which songs was I sad to lose? Try the Raveonettes, David Crosby, Dory Previn, 2Pac, Warren G, REM, the Ink Spots, Tom Petty, Wilco, Grandaddy and X for starters. A shame, also, that I used dead certs by Marlena Shaw and the Dead Kennedys in previous playlists. But what are you going to do?
This week, it's Oscar time. I'd like you to suggest songs that were written for movies. (That's songs, by the way. I'm excluding instrumental scores because they could fill a playlist on their own.) I'm not looking for classic movie music moments. For these purposes, it could be a song from a lousy film that you haven't even seen, or the track that plays over the closing credits. It can even be a cover version. It just has to be a recording that owes its existence to a film: musicals, Bond movies, blaxploitation, Oscar winners... We've already had Baby It's Cold Outside, Mona Lisa, Fight the Power and possibly some others whose names escape me.
One more request. I'm going to have to write the column earlier than usual so the more ideas that come in on Friday the better. Come Monday morning, I'll already have made my mind up. Sorry if that rules out any weekend brainwaves. Re: the social, currently shaping up to be a weekend night in late March, can anyone who wants to come and hasn't yet done so please email me on dorianlynskey@hotmail.com. Ta.
