Roll up! Roll up, you lucky people! This week's Readers Recommend promises to be a rollercoaster ride through the gawdy and surreal world of the fairground.
The various rides, sideshows and stalls offer an unforgettable range of images, not all of them friendly. Because underneath the veneer of family entertainment, there's a seamy side to the fairground: I worked on one as a child, and learned how to rip off customers, before being ripped off myself.
There are of course parallels with the music business, which has its share of hucksters and hustlers, illusory spectacles and fleeting diversions.
