Readers' assignment: railway stations around the world

For this week’s assignment we’re interested in seeing your photos, stories and particular experiences of railway stations around the world, after transheldrake sent in the photo above of the picturesque Muncaster Mill railway station in Cumbria .

When choosing the train as your mode of transport, railway stations are a necessity to get from A to B. Whether you commute by rail every day or look forward to a long distance journey when on holiday, we would like you to share your photos and stories about the railway stations you have encountered on your travels. From hanging baskets in the summer to heated waiting rooms during the winter months, what is your favourite thing about your local station? And what is the least decorative and run down looking station you have come across on your journeys?

Whether an overcrowded slab of concrete or a thing of tranquil beauty, you can share your railway station photos, stories and memories by clicking on the blue ‘Contribute’ button on this article. You can also use the GuardianWitness smartphone app or the new Guardian app and search for ‘GuardianWitness assignments’.

If you’d like to contribute an idea of your own, you can do so in Send us your assignment ideas.

Here are some of the contributions so far:

We were travelling around the Balkan region and saw lots of these abandoned stops. In some places, the train would stop and people would get off the train without a platform. This was on the route between Split and Zadar, we changed and Knin and took a local train for the rest of the journey.

A steam train travels through the tunnel at Grosmont station, North Yorkshire.
