Read Motor Group to add MG franchise with new-build showroom to follow

Grimsby’s Read Motor Group is bringing MG back to the town.

Mike Read will introduce the SAIC-owned brand in January at his Railway Street dealership ahead of building a new facility close to his Hyundai HQ at Altyre Way.

It will bring Suzuki and the new addition to the motor village location, where Vauxhall, Volvo, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Audi outlets also operate.

Mr Read said: “It is a great addition to the group. It is a fast-growing brand, gaining a lot of pace with its electric vehicle range so we were very keen to get involved with them.

“We are going to bring it to Railway Street, alongside Suzuki in the short term, then we are going to build a new showroom just off Altyre Way for both brands.”

The first MGs will be welcomed by Read in January, with a handful of jobs created as a dedicated team is assembled. Numbers are expected to develop further with the new showroom, proposed for next year.

Read, which also has Hyundai operations in Boston Doncaster, Kings Lynn, Lincoln and Worksop, was crowned Hyundai UK Dealer of the Year just before lockdown as a decade in business was celebrated.

Reflecting on 2020, Mr Read said: “Throughout every industry it has been a challenging year, stop-start. Since we came back from the first lockdown in June we’ve been absolutely delighted with the results and the performance of the group. The teams have done really well and we have had a really strong period from then up to date.

“The second lockdown slowed the job down but after sales, service and parts, remained busy, and we still sold quite a few cars online and through click and collect.

“Given the way it has been I’m really pleased with where we are at the moment.

“We’ll now be bringing a dedicated MG sales team and after sales team together as well, and the new site will further increase that.”

Following the collapse of MG Rover in 2005, the Chinese swooped for the Longridge plant and the brand, running it for a further decade before switching manufacturing to China, retaining Longbridge for research and development.
