Lee was the first chief technology officer of Square, the financial technology startup co-founded by Jack Dorsey, and now called Block Inc.

"It's real. Getting calls. Heartbreaking," Dorsey said according to KTVU.com. "Bob was instrumental to Square and Cash App. STL guy."

“I was with him just a few weeks ago and he gave me his trademark bear-hug and told everyone around about how amazing I was, and the story of how I had gotten to Square,” Mónica wrote. “He was brilliant and generous beyond words. We have been robbed of an amazing human being that had contributed so much. You’ll be missed.”

'Devastating News'

"I just got devastating news that our friend Bob Lee (@crazybob) was killed in SF early today,"  Bill Barhydt, the CEO of the digital payments firm Abra tweeted. "Bob was a dad, the former CTO of Square where he created Cash App & CTO of Mobile Coin. He was a generous decent human being who didn’t deserve to be killed."

"Hearbreaking," Paul Bohm, founder and CEO of the rideshare company TeleportXYZ tweeted. "Bob Lee@crazybob, CPO@mobilecoin & former CTO@Square, was tragically stabbed and killed in SF in SOMA last night around 2am. He had just moved to Miami and was only visiting for a day."

SpaceX CEO and Tesla (TSLA) top executive Elon Musk tweeting that he was very sorry to hear."

"This one sucks," one person wrote on Reddit. "I've known him since we were teens and he's a good one. He's prolific in world of computing and tech, and was probably one of the top 3 Java engineers in the US when he was the lead for the Android project".

Musk, who is also Twitter's CEO, said he was very sorry to hear about Lee's death.

He also complained that "violent crime in SF is horrific and even if attackers are caught, they are often released immediately." and asked San Francisco's District Attorney Brooke Jenkins "is the city taking stronger action to incarcerate repeat violent offenders?"
