Reaction as Health Secretary does not rule out 'further lockdown restrictions' across country

Nottinghamshire Live readers have reacted to news that further restrictions could come into effect.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock addressed the nation on Monday, January 11, during a televised conference.

Mr Hancock said "we are at the worst point of this pandemic" as 46,169 new cases were recorded across the UK on Sunday.

Currently, there are 32,294 people in hospital, with 926 average deaths each day over the past week.

Mr Hancock said the new variant of the virus is "highly contagious and putting the NHS under significant pressure."

He said he will not "rule out further action if it is needed" and is calling on people to "stay at home and reduce all social contact."

However, he did offer some positive news, saying that 2.6m vaccine doses to 2.3m people had been handed out, with two fifths of over 80s now receiving their first dose.

He also said that from the end of January "everyone will live 10 miles from a vaccine centre."

More than 200 people expressed their opinion on Nottinghamshire Live's Facebook page about his address to the nation.

Damien Smith said: "Just stop the flying in and out the UK and also people travelling out their areas again.

"Get road blocks in place as well as police checks to stop people being out when it’s not essential."

His view was also shared by Rose Mbr, who said: "We need check points and police visibility in every town and fine those who breach."

Michael Shipman said: "They keep saying 'Stay at Home' is one of the rules but majority still have to go to work! How can this work?"

Kieron Reid added: "No point in tighter restrictions. The ones breaking will continue, the ones not breaking will just be further restricting their lives.

Concerns were raised about whether the lockdown is actually working.

Judith Trussell said: "If people won’t realise the enormity of what we are facing then tighter restrictions might be the only option."

Daniel Rixson added: "The lockdown will never work. Because most people are not paying no attention."

And Linda Charlesworth stressed: "Give the vaccine to everybody that has to go to work."
