The Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra will perform a special concert in celebration of the coronation of HM the King, titled "Crown Imperial For His Majesty", in the Main Hall of Thailand Cultural Centre, Ratchadaphisek Road, tomorrow May 17 at 8pm.
The evening programme will open with Sir William Walton's historic Crown Imperial, an orchestral march originally written for the coronation of the British monarch King George VI in 1937.
Under the baton of Italian maestro Stefanos Tsialis, who has conducted some 80 orchestras worldwide, the RBSO will then perform Mozart's glorious Clarinet Concerto In A Major K 622 with world-renowned soloist Dimitri Ashkenazy, and Beethoven's iconic warhorse Symphony No.5 In C Minor Op 67.
Walton was one of the most exciting composers of the 20th century in any genre, but with Crown Imperial in particular he achieved a directness of expression that appeals to the musical connoisseur and layman in equal measure.
Mozart's Clarinet Concerto is one of his most substantial late masterworks, universally acknowledged as an acid test for soloists, musically as much as technically.
This is the first time Ashkenazy (son of the legend pianist/conductor Vladimir) will join the orchestra to deliver this gem of the repertoire, continuing a hugely successful international career in his own right which has included the world premieres of no fewer than four contemporary concertos.
Beethoven's Symphony No.5 was last performed by the RBSO, to a rapturous reception in 2015. Its unparalleled journey towards ultimate triumph will crown tomorrow's concert.
Tickets cost 300, 700, 900, 1,200 and 1,500 baht (half prices for students) and can be purchased from Thai Ticket Major (visit thaiticketmajor.com or call 02-262-3456).
