It’s been quite the competition for the spot behind Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison on the Vikings running back depth chart.
The battle is between Ameer Abdullah and second-year running back Mike Boone.
Who is going to win it?
It looked like Boone was the favorite heading into Thursday night’s final preseason game against the Bills, but then Abdullah helped his cause, running five times for 21 yards (4.2 yards per carry) and catching a 15-yard touchdown pass.
Boone ran six times for 19 yards (3.2 yards per carry) and had one catch for six yards.
2019 preseason stats:
Boone: 41 rushes, 196 yards (4.8 ypc), 2 touchdowns, 3 receptions, 57 yards
Abdullah: 10 rushes, 88 yards (8.8 ypc), 2 receptions, 20 yards, 1 touchdown
With Abdullah’s ability to return kicks and punts, it’s possible that the Vikings will keep four running backs, even if Boone does get the RB3 spot — especially when you consider Dalvin Cook’s injury history.
Roster moves are due Saturday afternoon, so we’ll know shortly.
