RB Malcolm Brown will not return from IR this season

With one week left in the Miami Dolphins’ 2021 campaign, there was still a decision to be made at the running back position.

Seventh-year back Malcolm Brown suffered a quad injury during the first quarter of the team’s Week 7 game against the Atlanta Falcons. Since then, he’s been on injured reserve.

Miami brought Brown back to practice on the Wednesday before their Week 15 team. The Dolphins had 21 days to activate the running back or his season would be over. That 21-day period comes to an end on Wednesday, and according to head coach Brian Flores, Brown will not be returning to the active roster.

With only one game left in the season and the team already being eliminated from postseason contention, this isn’t a big deal. In recent weeks, the Dolphins have gotten some strong efforts from Duke Johnson, Phillip Lindsay, and Myles Gaskin as the running back trio, and they are comfortable playing New England with that group.

On the season, Brown finished with 33 carries for 125 yards and a touchdown on the ground, adding three receptions for 10 yards in the receiving game.

Brown only signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins this past offseason, so he’s set to become a free agent again. We may have seen his last snaps in a Dolphins jersey.
