RB Leipzig supporters' protest during Champions League clash against Tottenham explained

After watching their side dominate the first half of their UEFA Champions League last-16 first-leg clash against Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this evening, the travelling RB Leipzig supporters brought to play to a halt just seconds into the second half.

The travelling contingent, who had made the trip over from Germany. threw toilet roll-type objects onto the pitch from behind the goal that Leipzig were attacking in a bid to stage a protest about ticket prices.

Play was halted just 20 seconds after the restart by referee Cuneyt Cakir after the objects had made their way onto the playing surface.

The long, white pieces were moved off the pitch by Spurs trio Hugo Lloris, Davison Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld, as well as by a group of stadium stewards.

The protest by the Leipzig supporters was all about ticket prices for the Champions League, with the away fans displaying a banner that read: 'Stand up for a fair price cap.'

The stance against high ticket prices came from the travelling supporters because of the price they will have been charged for tonight's first-leg, which will have proven to be a lot more expensive than what they are usually made to pay to watch the Bundesliga in Germany.

German football is renowned for being cheap to watch in footballing terms, with the average price of a Season Ticket in Germany being just €186.25, in comparison to the average price of a Premier League one costing over £400.

The protest from the visiting supporters in North London quickly passed by, though, with the game getting back underway within in a minute of the referee halting play.
