RB Leipzig release Michael Edwards statement after Liverpool exit claim

RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff has confirmed that Michael Edwards will not be the club's next sporting director.

It was reported earlier today by SportBILD that Liverpool's sporting director was a 'hot candidate' for the vacancy, which has remained unfilled since Markus Krosche departed the club for Eintracht Frankfurt at the end of last season.

Edwards was first linked with an Anfield exit back in August, with the Athletic claiming that the Reds' transfer guru is expected to leave once his contract with the club expires at the end of the season.

It appears as though a potential move to Germany is off the cards, however, with Leipzig's chief ruling out this possibility.

"Michael Edwards will not be our sporting director," Mintzlaff told DAZN.

"The fact is that we are looking for a sporting director who fits the club, our philosophy and direction."

Edwards has significantly enhanced his reputation since working for the Reds, having helped seal deals for the likes of Alisson Becker, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

His ability to recoup significant fees for fringe players has also been a major asset, with Dominic Solanke and Rhian Brewster two obvious examples.

Sources indicated to the ECHO back in summer that the club wanted to retain the services of Edwards, though there have been no further developments since the summer as far as his Liverpool future is concerned.
