RB Leipzig make Dayot Upamecano decision as Arsenal receive transfer update

Dayot Upamecano has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal but the Gunners will have to wait if they want to pull off a deal for the defender.

That's because the 21-year-old has come to terms on a new contract with RB Leipzig, according to RMC.

Upamecano has taken his game to another level this past season and that has led to speculation aplenty surrounding the centre-back's future.

Leipzig have reportedly come to terms on a deal that extends Upamecano's contract until the summer of 2022, making sure they do not lose the promising player for free next term.

Arsenal fans will be disappointed by the news because it means a deal for the defender is unlikely this summer.

But it follows the plan that Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff hinted at earlier this month to eventually sell Upamecano down the line.

"I assume that he [Upamecano] will also play for us next season," Mintzlaff told Kicker this month.

"We are in good talks to find a solution to prevent him from leaving on a free transfer next year.

"It worked out with Timo Werner, and I assume that we will do our homework with regard to Dayot as well."

Whilst Upamecano doesn't appear to be going anywhere this summer, this deal actually perhaps highlights that next summer is the opportune time to strike and land Upamecano.
