RB Leipzig chief makes transfer admission over Arsenal target Dayot Upamecano

RB Leipzig director Markus Krosche has said that he would be 'surprised' if Europe's top clubs don't approach the club over defender Dayot Upamecano during the January transfer window.

Arsenal have shown an interest in the Frenchman as Mikel Arteta look to add strength to their defensive options over the window. A long-term injury to Calum Chambers has made the need for defensive reinforcements all the more important for the Gunners.

The club reportedly made an attempt to sign the central defender during the summer, with some reports suggesting they failed with a bid of up to £65 million for the RB Leipzig man.

Barcelona have also been linked with a move for the 21-year-old, with the Catalan giants said to have made Upamecano one of their 'top targets'.

The interest of both Arsenal and Barcelona comes as no surprise to Krosche, who has also sent a message about the defender's future at the club.

"Dayot is currently one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga, so it would surprise me if no clubs came knocking for him,” He told Bild (via Get Football News Germany.)

"He’s certainly an attractive player for the big clubs in Europe but he can still take a few steps forward and develop with us.”

Arsenal have also been linked with a move for Juventus defender Merih Demiral, although a serious knee injury to the Turkey international may now mean that the Gunners could turn their attention back to Upamecano.
