RB Leipzig chief provides Timo Werner transfer update amid Liverpool links

RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff has insisted that Timo Werner is happy at the club and focused on the rest of the season amid suggestions that Liverpool are interested in the striker.

Werner has long been linked with a move to Anfield and it has previously been claimed that the Reds made contact with the Bundesliga club during the January transfer window.

The 23-year-old has a £50million release clause in his contract and various reports have indicated that Jurgen Klopp's side are expected to trigger it in a bid to bring him to Anfield during the summer.

Speaking after Leipzig's 3-0 win over Werder Bremen on Saturday, Mintzlaff told Transfermarkt: "We hear these reports all the time.

"Someone makes something up, and everyone else copies it. Werner is happy here and wants to play the rest of the season."

Earlier on Saturday, there were Italian claims that Liverpool had decided to meet Werner's buyout clause before it expires in April and had now entered 'advanced talks' with the striker over a move.

However, Mintzlaff reportedly told Transfermarkt that Leipzig had not had any communication from the Reds regarding their interest in the forward.

Werner has caught the eye of many of Europe's top clubs after scoring 20 goals in just 22 Bundesliga appearances to help Julian Nagelsmann's side to the top of the table.

The Germany international, who has also scored three times in Leipzig's current Champions League campaign, is also understood to be attracting interest from Chelsea .

Meanwhile, Liverpool moved another step closer to securing their first league title in 30 years with a hard-fought 1-0 win over bottom side Norwich on Saturday.

The runaway leaders were struggling to break down the Canaries before substitute Sadio Mane's well taken goal in 78th minute secured their 25th win of the campaign.

In addition to extending their lead at the top of the table to 25 points, the victory at Carrow Road also guaranteed the Reds a place in next season's Champions League.

Klopp's side continue their European campaign with a trip to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday for the first leg of their last-16 tie, while Leipzig travel to Tottenham the following night.
