RB Leipzig boss suggested Timo Werner would have fit in better at Liverpool

RB Leipzig manager Ralf Rangnick admitted Chelsea-bound Timo Werner would have fit in really well at Liverpool.

Rangnick was asked to comment on the Reds' transfer interest in his side's star asset when they were strongly linked with a move for him.

Rangnick told BILD: "The league is less important, but the club, from a purely hypothetical point of view, I would better see him in good hands with a club that is not necessarily defined by ball possession football.

"Since Timo has made progress under Julian Nagelsmann, his most important weapons, however, are the quick switching movement and his powerful finish.

"Therefore, he would rather fit a club like Liverpool, which is similar to our style of play, but I would prefer him to stay here."

Liverpool were favourites to land the German, and had until June 15 - the day in which Werner's £50million release clause expires - to get the deal over the line.

But despite Reds manager Jurgen Klopp being very interested in the forward, Liverpool were forced to abandon the transfer race.

The global coronavirus pandemic has seen Liverpool tighten their belts, and £50million was deemed too high a price to complete the deal.

Werner saw a dream move to Bayern Munich break down at the eleventh hour last summer and didn't want lightning to strike twice.

And after meeting with Frank Lampard and Petr Cech, agreed that a move to Chelsea instead of Liverpool - despite his manager's comments - would be best for his career development.

Werner is set to sign for Chelsea this week in a deal with £54million. He is expected to put pen to paper on a four-year deal.
