RB Leipzig 2-1 Atletico: Tyler Adams strikes late to seal Champions League semi-final spot in Lisbon

A late strike from American midfielder Tyler Adams sent RB Leipzig into the semi-finals of the Champions League and broke Atletico Madrid hearts in Lisbon on Thursday night.

Adams struck a low drive from outside the box with two minutes remaining and saw his fierce effort deflect off defender Stefan Savic and wrong-foot Jan Oblak on its way into the corner.

The Bundesliga side had the better of an even first half and Marcel Halstenberg missed perhaps the best chance of the opening 45 minutes as he volleyed over with his left foot following a corner.

Atletico struggled to get out of their own half initially, but Diego Simeone’s side could have had a penalty after Saul had his heel clipped in the area inside 15 minutes.

The scores were level at the break, but Spanish international Dani Olmo glanced a header past Oblak early in the second period to hand Leipzig a precious lead.

Simeone sent on Joao Felix after that and his side improved immediately with the Portuguese’s pace offering them an outlet.

The club’s record signing won a penalty after 70 minutes after he was brought down by Lukas Klostermann and stepped up to convert it himself, but Leipzig’s late goal was enough for them to win despite a frantic finale and set up a mouth-watering meeting with Paris Saint-Germain in the last four.
