ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. _ The Rays are putting some staff on furlough and cutting the pay of most other full-time employees as a result of the financial impact of the coronavirus shutdown.
Staffers were told Tuesday of the moves. The furloughs are said to be temporary, meaning no jobs are being eliminated, though employees will be recalled when needed and not necessarily when there is an announcement of play resuming. The pay cuts affect all staff making a certain annual salary and are increased progressively based on how much the employee makes. The team also canceled its 2020 internship program.
The Rays will announce details later this week about offering refunds or credits for tickets purchased for March and April games that were not played.
