NEW YORK Gio Urshela's fifth-inning, two-run homer had grabbed back the lead Thursday afternoon, giving the Yankees hope of finding an elusive route to victory against a thorny opponent.
Moments later, the Tampa Bay Rays had retaken command with a five-run sixth.
And by day's end at empty Yankee Stadium, the Rays had also assumed the AL East lead with their 10-5 matinee victory.
In sweeping three straight games, the Rays (17-9) moved a half-game ahead of the Yankees (16-9), who have lost six of seven games against Tampa Bay this season.
Plus, the Yankees lost shortstop Gleyber Torres with a left hamstring injury following an RBI groundout, just hours after reliever Zack Britton was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain.
Torres exited after three innings Thursday and was being evaluated.
