Rays Star Tyler Glasnow Suffers Oblique Injury in Spring Training

Rays starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow suffered an oblique injury during a spring training practice Monday and is expected to miss the start of the 2023 MLB season

According to Mark Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, Glasnow sustained the injury during a live batting practice session. Glasnow will reportedly undergo an MRI on Tuesday, though the Rays are anticipating he'll be sidelined for Opening Day.

Glasnow's appearance in the live BP was brief, throwing just six pitches before being escorted off the mound by one of Tampa Bay’s athletic trainers. The righthander had not yet made an appearance for the Rays during spring training, and now his 2023 regular season debut will be delayed following yet another injury to the 29-year-old.

During his four-and-a-half seasons in Tampa Bay following a trade from Pittsbuegh, Glasnow has made just 50 starts, never starting more than 14 games in a season. When active and available, Glasnow has been one of the game's best pitchers, having recorded a 3.05 ERA with 364 strikeouts in 268 1/3 innings for the Rays.

He was hopeful of entering the season without any inning restrictions and with a clean bill of health, but those hopes have seemingly been dashed before the calendar even turns to March.

It's a trend that's becoming far too familiar for Rays fans. Glasnow featured just twice last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2021.
